Mathematical control theory, the immune system, and cancer

چکیده

I use simple ideas, endowed from mathematical control theory and from qualitative theory of differential equations, in order to analyze in general grounds the human immune system. The simplest model, in which the response is proportional to the pathogen load, leads to the condition that the annihilation rate of pathogens in any tissue should be greater than the pathogen’s average rate of growth. When nonlinearities are added, a reference value for the number of pathogens and a stability condition, relating strength of regular threats, barrier height and annihilation rate, emerge. The stability condition allows a qualitative comparison between tissues. On the other hand, in cancer immunity, the linear model leads to an expression for the lifetime risk, which accounts for both the effects of carcinogens (endogenous or external) and the immune response. Finally, an integral term is added to the model in order to simulate the process of recruitment of immune cells from blood circulation.

Reinforcement learning based feedback control of tumor growth by limiting maximum chemo-drug dose using fuzzy logic

In this paper, a model-free reinforcement learning-based controller is designed to extract a treatment protocol because the design of a model-based controller is complex due to the highly nonlinear dynamics of cancer. The Q-learning algorithm is used to develop an optimal controller for cancer chemotherapy drug dosing. In the Q-learning algorithm, each entry of the Q-table is updated using data...

Mathematical Modeling and Lyapunov-Based Drug Administration in Cancer Chemotherapy

In this paper a new mathematical model is developed for the dynamics between tumor cells, normal cells, immune cells, chemotherapy drug concentration and drug toxicity. Then, the theorem of Lyapunov stability is applied to design treatment strategies for drug protocols that ensure a desired rate of tumor cell kill and push the system to the area with smaller tumor cells. Using of this theorem a...

The immunomodulatory effects of shark cartilage on the mouse and human immune system

Background: Sharks get cancer rarely. A major difference between these animals and other species is that sharks have a great amount of cartilaginous tissue. Immunomodulatory effects of the cartilage of some species (cow) have been proved. Because the immune system has a major role in the defense of the body against cancer, we studied the effects of shark cartilage on the mouse and human immune...
